The inspiration for this piece is something that happened a little while back. It led me to realize that for every person in different wakes of life, your worst enemy is always you. That’s crazy you may say, you’re insane, how can you be your own worst enemy, blah-de-blah. No one likes to blame themselves for anything, we are all angels and we are all always right, but I don’t think so. I believe that the only thing standing in our way of reaching greatness is our own inner selves. Another word for it is fear. No one creates our worries for us, we do that ourselves and we have to fight it and overcome it ourselves.
Your worst enemy is you!
“Just do it!” This beautiful, powerful slogan from Nike is so simple, so elegant, and so applicable to everything in our lives. To me, it implies that idea of not waiting around for things to magically unfold for you, but that if you truly want something then go out and get it. Don’t keep waiting around, hoping for something to happen. Nothing is going to happen unless you make it happen.
Often times, you’re going to have a little bit of toxic in your life. There will be all kinds of people telling you that you can’t do it, that you’re too weak, that you’re not smart enough. All these people are doing is burning out the fire from inside you. They can’t stop you from doing something, but because they can’t do it, they’re going to try to convince you that you can’t either. The key word here is “try”. All they can do is try and get in your head, and then it’s up to you. You are either going to overcome your internal fears and do it or succumb to it and lose out. This is when my famous motto comes in to play. Maybe it’ll help you out as well, “Haters gonna hate, potatoes gonna potate!”
Haters gonna hate, potatoes gonna potate!
That is my comic way of dealing with such people. No one’s going to like it when you do something they can’t. Jealousy and envy are innate in all humanity. It’s one of the things that separates us from animals. My advice to you is to not worry about what people may say to you. If you truly want something, you have to go out and do it, you have to get it yourself. You have to fight for it. The more you think about it, the more hesitant you’ll get, the more fear will feed on you, the less you’ll want to do it. I believe that that only thing you need to think about before doing something is if it’ll harm others or not. If it won’t, then there is nothing stopping you except your own fear. So you go out and sky dive, scuba dive, swim in the lake, go hiking, start a business, start a blog, create a website, pick up a new sport, travel someplace exotic, you go out and you do it, and don’t let the world tell you that you can’t.
As for me, I went cliff diving into a lake a while back. The largest cliff there was roughly about 30 to 50 feet high. Many people were scared to jump off from it. I was too. My legs were shaking from the inside my heartbeat felt faster than the speed of light. There were rocks near the bottom. So many things could go wrong, but I really wanted to do it. So I looked down, took one deep breath, and jumped!
